Bag counts by situation

Not sure where to start? These examples show how your routine can change the number of bags you use. Your own plan may look different, and that’s okay.

Occasional bottles

4–8 bags

1–2 bags a week, over four weeks

Freezing extra milk

60–90 bags

2–3 sessions frozen each day, up to 6 oz per session, over 30 days

Daycare or work

66–88 bags

3–4 sessions frozen per day apart, up to 6 oz each, over 22 days

Exclusively pumping and freezing all milk

210–270 bags

7–9 sessions frozen each day, up to 6 oz each, over 30 days

The lighter end shows the range in each example. These are bag-use examples, not feeding or pumping targets, and don’t include extra bags or unused bags at home. These examples count one bag per session, with each session at or below 6 oz. Milk kept in bottles may not need a bag. Exclusive pumping doesn’t mean you need to freeze every feed.

FROM PLANNING TO EVERYDAY TRACKING

Know what’s in your freezer, one bag at a time

A parent tracking Cubtale QR-labeled milk bags with a phone resting on the table.

You’ve planned how many bags to buy. Pair Cubtale’s QR-labeled milk bags with the Cubtale app to keep track of the milk inside them. Log each bag’s amount, pumping date, and storage location, then see your fridge and freezer inventory in one place.

The app suggests which bag to use next based on amount and expiry, and alerts you when bags are nearing their expiry. As you and your caregivers log milk added and used, your inventory stays up to date. Less counting in the freezer, more confidence about what’s ready.

Your milk storage bag questions, answered

How does the calculator work?

We count one bag for each pumping session you plan to freeze. If one session has more than 6 oz to freeze, we split it into enough bags to stay within that limit. We multiply bags per session by sessions per day and planned days, add your chosen percentage of extra bags (rounded up), then subtract unused bags at home. Any bags still needed are rounded up to Cubtale packs of 100.

For example: three sessions a day, with 3 oz to freeze from each session, for 30 days uses 90 bags. Adding 10% gives 99 bags. With no unused bags at home, that means one pack of 100, with one bag left over.

Does this tell me how much milk I need for work or time away?

This tool estimates storage bags for milk you already plan to freeze. To plan milk for days apart, use the Return-to-Work Milk Planner. If you have a freezer goal and a timeline in mind, use the Freezer Stash Goal Calculator.

What if my extra milk changes each day?

Use a typical amount to freeze per session and the number of sessions you plan to freeze each day. If session amounts vary, your count may differ, especially when a session exceeds 6 oz and needs an additional bag. Update the estimate as your routine changes.

Why does a partly filled bag count as a whole bag?

Each session you freeze uses its own bag, even when the bag is not full. We don’t combine milk from separate sessions to fill a bag. For example, two sessions with 2 oz to freeze from each use two bags. One session with 8 oz to freeze also uses two bags because it exceeds the 6 oz limit.

Which bags should I include in “Unused bags you already have”?

Count empty, unused storage bags you can use for this plan. Leave out bags already filled with milk. If you already have enough, the calculator shows zero bags to buy and confirms that your unused bags cover the plan.

Do I need to add extra bags?

Extra bags are optional. They give you a little flexibility for a damaged bag, a spill, or an extra portion. Set the percentage to zero if you only want the bags needed for your planned milk. The calculator rounds extra bags up to a whole bag.

How much milk should I put in each bag?

This estimate counts one bag per session, up to 6 oz. A session with more milk to freeze is split across additional bags. For example, a 7 oz session uses two bags. Follow the bag’s fill instructions and leave room for expansion.

If you prefer smaller portions, you may use more bags than this estimate. You can use Cubtale’s baby feeding tracker to review your baby’s usual bottle amounts.

What comes in a Cubtale pack?

Each pack includes 100 Cubtale Breast Milk Storage Bags and 100 QR milk labels. The calculator recommends whole packs of 100 and shows how many bags remain after your plan, extra allowance, and unused bags already at home.

Explore Cubtale Breast Milk Storage Bags and labels. You can also use the labels with Cubtale’s milk inventory tools to keep track of your stash.

How long can I store breast milk?

For storage times, thawing, and handling, visit our breast milk storage guide. Follow your bag’s instructions and any guidance from your baby’s care team.

Can my partner or caregiver keep track of the milk we use?

Share the Cubtale app with your partner or caregiver so everyone can follow feeding patterns and see the daily snapshot. Use the average comparison chart to compare logged amounts over time, then update your plan as your routine changes.

Pair it with Cubtale’s QR-labeled milk bags to log milk as it is stored and used, see what is available, and know which bag to reach for next.

Where can I explore pumping routines?

Explore our pumping schedule guide for ideas to discuss as you build a routine around your day. If you are considering power pumping, our power pumping guide explains the approach. These tools calculate the plan you enter; they do not choose a pumping routine or predict milk supply.

Where can I find the other milk stash tools?

Visit our Milk Stash Planner to choose between planning milk for your return to work, building toward a freezer goal, and calculating storage bags.

Can I share or print my plan?

Choose “Share” to open your phone’s sharing options where supported. On desktop, a popup offers WhatsApp, email, or a link you can copy. The link carries your entered amounts and choices so your partner or caregiver can open the same plan.

Choose “Print” to open your browser’s print dialog directly. Entries are not saved automatically. Keep the plan link or a printed copy, and update it as your routine changes.
