Week 16–18

Rolling Into New Adventures

Welcome to the 4th month! Your baby is getting stronger, more curious, and more determined to move.

These weeks are full of exciting physical changes—your little one is starting to realize there’s more to life than just lying on their back. You might see early rolling attempts, more deliberate grabs, and endless fascination with the world around them.

What’s Happening with Your Baby in Weeks 16–18?

  • Rolling practice begins. Some babies start to roll from tummy to back, even if by accident.

  • Stronger core & neck. Tummy time looks totally different now—they may push up high, pivot, or even scoot a little.

  • Grabbing everything. Toys, blankets, your hair—if it’s in reach, it’s fair game!

  • Early teething signs. Drooling ramps up, and they’ll chew on their hands constantly.

  • Laughing more. Those sweet giggles might turn into full belly laughs with the right tickle or funny face.

Your baby is becoming a mini explorer, eager to see what they can do next.

Feeding: Still the Main Source of Nutrition

Milk (breastmilk or formula) is still their only food at this stage.

  • Most babies feed every 3–4 hours during the day.

  • Some may sleep longer at night, naturally spacing out feeds.

  • Even if drooling and chewing make you wonder about teething, it’s usually still early for actual teeth.

💡 We’ll talk about getting ready for solids in the next few weeks—when to start, how to introduce them safely, and what changes to expect (yes, poop colors too!).

Sleep: Hints of a Routine

Some babies begin to fall into a more natural rhythm:

  • 3–4 naps per day, slightly longer than the newborn catnaps.

  • Longer stretches at night—sometimes 6–8 hours, but it varies.

  • Awake windows may stretch to 2–2.5 hours now.

If your baby’s sleep is still all over the place, don’t stress—every baby finds their rhythm at a different pace.

Playtime Is Leveling Up

These weeks are perfect for interactive and movement-based play:

  • Rolling practice. Gently help your baby roll from side to side—it builds body awareness.

  • High-contrast toys. Their vision is sharper, so they’ll love more detailed toys and books.

  • Rattles & soft toys. They’re better at grabbing and shaking now.

  • Mirror games. Babies love smiling at their “friend” in the mirror.

Short, frequent play sessions are best—they still tire easily.

What You Might Notice

  • Drooling + hand chewing. Totally normal—it’s how babies explore and soothe themselves.

  • Squealing & babbling. Their voice gets louder and more expressive.

  • A developmental leap. Around 4 months, many babies go through a growth spurt + mental leap, which can bring a few clingier days.

A Gentle Reminder

Just a few weeks ago, your baby was mostly lying still. Now they’re lifting, grabbing, laughing, and maybe even rolling.

Every little movement is a huge milestone—and every giggle is a reminder of how much they’ve grown.

You’re guiding them through such an exciting stage.

What’s Coming Next?

Weeks 19–20 will be all about getting ready for solids, exploring textures, and understanding the first steps to safe feeding. We’ll also dive into how poop changes with solids and what colors mean (and when to worry).
